DESCRIPTION:Date : January 31\, 2019 \nTime : 7:00PM \nAdmission : Free for Students/$25 \nLocation : Mainstage \n\n\nEdvinas Minkstimas’ professional debut was at the age of fourteen with The Lithuanian National Philharmonic Orchestra.  Now he is widely regarded as one of Europe’s top emerging young pianists.  Among his many awards has been top honors at the Tchaikovsky International Competition for Young Musicians (Moscow)\, the International Knezkova- Hussey Piano Competition (Canada) and European Piano Days (France).  He has performed throughout Europe and North America including appearing as a guest soloist with the Las Vegas Philharmonic and at the Mahler Festival in Vienna\, Austria. Mr. Minkstimas became a Steinway Artist in August\, 2013.  At USC Aiken’s Winter Nocturne concert his program will include selections by Schumann\, Gershwin and Liszt.

Recent concert highlights include\, Schwartz Center\, Emory University\, Atlanta\, GA; Yamaha Hall and Haydn Birthplace\, Vienna\, Austria; O’Shaughnessy Theatre\, Minneapolis\, MN; and Benjamin performed original compositions for President Carter during a live broadcast at the Carter Center. As a student Benjamin studied and performed solo music\, chamber music\, and original compositions in summer festivals and masterclasses such as\, Wiener Masterclasses\, Banff Center Piano Master Classes\, Brandywine International Piano Festival\, International Keyboard Festival at Mannes\, and his original compositions have been featured on NPR. Benjamin holds Bachelor and Master of Music degrees from the Eastman School of Music where he studied with Rebecca Penneys. He completed his Doctorate of Musical Arts in Piano Performance at Boston University under the tutelage of the late Anthony di Bonaventura. \nA native of Atlanta\, Georgia\, Benjamin is currently Assistant Professor at Georgia Southern University\, Armstrong Campus\, Savannah\, GA. There\, he teaches piano and other music-related courses\, and is founder and Artistic Director of the concert series\, Piano in the Arts. During the summers\, Benjamin has been on faculty at Boston University Tanglewood Institute\, Blue Lake Fine Arts\, Chautauqua Institution\, and is currently on faculty at Rebecca Penneys Piano Festival during the summer. He is a member of Pi Kappa Lambda\, Music Teachers National Association\, Savannah Music Teachers Association\, and is an ASCAP composer. Recently Benjamin released his debut album\, Warsaw plays Warsaw\, featuring a set of 24 Preludes of original music for piano. Since its beginning in 2003\, Concerts with a Cause has donated $198\,719.58 to 53 organizations. \nA professionally-staffed nursery is provided at each concert.    A reception follows most concerts in our Fellowship Hall.

Although his repertoire runs the gamut from Bach and Scarlatti to Schoenberg\, Stravinski and later Twentieth Century Masters\, he is a specialist in the virtuoso romantic literature.In addition\, he is active as a duo recitalist with his wife\, cellist Barbara Altman. \nAmong his teachers were world renowned artists Francisek Zahara\, Eugene List\, Jeaneane Dowis\, Frank Weinstock\, and David Bar-Ilan. \nAs a pedagogue\, Altman’s students have been accepted into graduate programs in major conservatories and universities alike. Altman also teaches the Piano Literature courses at Mercer University and is considered a scholar in the area of 19th Century Romanticism.

DESCRIPTION:Audra McDonald is unparalleled in the breadth and versatility of her artistry as both a singer and an actor. The winner of a record-breaking six Tony Awards\, two Grammy Awards\, and an Emmy Award\, she was named one of Time magazine’s 100 most influential people of 2015 and received a 2015 National Medal of Arts-America’s highest honor for achievement in the arts-from President Barack Obama. In addition to her Tony-winning performances in Carousel\, Master Class\, Ragtime\, A Raisin in the Sun\, The Gershwins’ Porgy and Bess\, and Lady Day at Emerson’s Bar & Grill-the role that also served as the vehicle for her 2017 debut on London’s West End (2018 Olivier Award nomination)-she has appeared on Broadway in The Secret Garden\, Marie Christine (Tony nomination)\, Henry IV\, 110 in the Shade (Tony nomination)\, and Shuffle Along\, Or\, The Making of the Musical Sensation of 1921 and All That Followed\, and she stars in Frankie and Johnny in the Clair de Lune in summer 2019. The Juilliard-trained soprano’s opera credits include La voix humaine and Send at Houston Grand Opera\, and Rise and Fall of the City of Mahagonny at Los Angeles Opera. As rehearsal pianist and musical assistant for the Cleveland Orchestra and Chorus\, he has participated in the preparation of Bach St. John Passion\, Brahms Requiem\, Duruflé Requiem\, Dvořák Stabat Mater\, Poulenc Gloria\, and Stravinsky Threni\, as well as the January 2018 performances of Haydn Die Jahreszeiten in Severance Hall and Carnegie Hall. The recipient of a Fulbright grant to Austria\, he studied song interpretation with Carolyn Hague\, Angelika Kirchschlager\, and Birgid Steinberger at the Vienna Conservatory\, and opera coaching with David Aronson and Kristin Okerlund of the Wiener Staatsoper. Also an avid chamber musician\, he studied instrumental collaboration at the Cleveland Institute of Music. In addition\, Mr. Overly has participated in masterclasses and festivals\, such as the Fall Island Vocal Arts Seminar\, the Franz-Schubert-Institut\, the Oxford Lieder Festival\, and the Tanglewood Music Center as the Leonard Bernstein Fellow.
